Welcome to North West Italy

North West Italy is that portion of the italian territory comprising the regions Piedmont, Aosta Valley, Liguria and Lombardy and is inhabited by ca 16 millions people.

This macro-region borders with France (through Western Alps), with Switzerland (central alps) , with North-East Italy and with Ligurian Sea to the South.

This area covers a big portion of the pianura padana and comprises highly industrialized regions with strong touristic attraction.

Historically speaking, in the last centuries, the North West mainly identifies with the dominions of Casa Savoia, that is the continental part of the Regno di Sardegna. Lombardy, intimately connected to Liguria and Piedmont, has historically developed great economical and political bounds with Veneto (North-East).

With the exception of Aosta Valley, North Western economy has been historically connected with the heavy industry, created by direct national intervention.

For this reason, this part is sometimes also referred to as “prima italia” (first Italy), distinct from the other economical Italies of Center-North-East (mainly linked to the medium and small industry , traditionally more independent and less linked to national intervention) and of the South (linked to an economy more dependent on direct national intervention).
